Schoolteacher asks for half of student’s scholarship, suspended

Vidya Devi, head teacher of Government Primary School, Gahaur, who had taken back 50 per cent of the scholarship amount of the student has been suspended by the Education Department.

The inquiry was ordered into the matter and suspension orders have been issued by District Education Officer (Elementary) Rajinder Kaur after the head teacher was found guilty during the inquiry.

The incident took place last week when schoolhead Vidya Devi had asked a Class V student Kavita’s parents to deposit half of the amount of the scholarship given to their daughter back to the school. Kavita was given Rs 2,000 through direct transfer as scholarship meant for handicapped students and she was asked to deposit back Rs 1,000 with the school head. Her parents deposited the money with the schoolhead, but at the same time also informed the village sarpanch as well.

Kavita received a scholarship of Rs 2,000 in the bank account of her mother. She had asked her mother to bring Rs1,000 back as she wanted to use the same amount to meet some of the expenses of school. — TNS
