Nearly 1,600 unaided colleges today sought immediate intervention of the Centre and the state government to bail them out the crisis that has arisen out of non-disbursal of post matric scholarships amounting to Rs 1,286 crore. Raising concern at a meeting of the Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA), the members said over three lakh students were directly affected.
“The Centre is not releasing the pending amount due to non-submission of audit reports even as the state government is requesting it to at least disburse some amount from the total outstanding,” said Anshu kataria, chairman of the association.
“Both students and unaided colleges are facing hardships. Last year, just Rs 323 crore was released,” he said.
The Centre is supposed to pay Rs 719 crore for 2016-17 and Rs 567 crore for 2017-18 to the state. Besides, another Rs 500 crore is due for 2018-19. — TNS
